The kids got a Wii U for Christmas this year. Actually, the whole family got a Wii U for Christmas this year. David and I have enjoyed it just as much as they have. Before Santa dropped it under our tree Christmas Eve night, I wondered how much better it could be than the regular Wii. The answer is a lot. One of the things I love about it is how easy it is to use your Wii U to Stream Netflix. Yes, we could do it with the old one, but the Wii U seems easier and the picture appears to be better.
The Wii U game pad makes it super easy for everyone to search Netflix to find the movies and shows they want to watch. Once the Netflix app is added, all you have to do is touch it on the game pad.
From there you can select regular Netflix or the Kids channel. James screams “PICK KIDS” every time we watch something. Then he takes the game pad from us and searches for what he wants to watch.
The favorite characters they watch the most automatically come up on the screen. You can use your finger or the controller to move through the different categories.
A description of each program with the actors and director is available by touching or highlighting the movies that interest you. Also, you can see recommended suggestions based on your previous viewing history, just like when you stream Netflix on your computer or tablet.
The only thing I don’t like about using our Wii U to stream Netflix is that profiles are not available in the app, which means the main profile, mine, is the one where all of the viewing information is recorded. The downside to that is that my recommendations are kind of screwed up. Now instead of the stuff I normally like to watch being recommended, I’m getting suggested shows like My Little Pony and Richie Rich. No thank you. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is updated soon.
Of course the upside to this is one check of my Netflix account and I can see every show that my kids recently watched. This could be a good thing if you have a little one who you need to keep closer tabs on.
I don’t think the one detractor takes away from all of the positives of using your Wii U to stream Netflix. It makes family movie night super easy and you can use equipment you already own to make watching Netflix on your television easier.
