Last year Cady came to me and said, “Momma, all I want to do is sing.”
I gave her permission to drop all of her extracurricular activities (except for Girl Scouts) and signed her up for voice lessons. Since then, I’ve tried to think of different ways to involve her in singing. It isn’t as easy as you would think.
A couple of weeks ago I saw that our local festival was having a talent show this year. I signed her up, and this weekend she sang in her first judged singing competition (she did a small show for her classmates last year). I have never been more nervous about anything in my life. She was pretty nervous too.
The person managing the show, a performer himself, gave her a great pep talk before she stepped on stage. Armed with positive words and thoughts, she stepped on stage. And she did a GREAT job! She even won third place! Out of three, but still. The other two contestants have been singing twice as long as her (one was a freshman in college and the other was a guy in his twenties who sang a song he wrote). She won a prize and got to go back on Saturday to perform again as one of the opening numbers for the main act, an Elvis impersonator (not even kidding).
The whole point of her doing the show was to gain experience singing on a stage in front of an audience and she did it. She was so brave. She conquered her nerves and did a great job. This was a huge milestone for her.
While I’m sure this will only be the first of many shows for her, it will always be THE first. The one where she wasn’t sure she could do. The one where she thought she was going to “pass out” (her words). But the first one where she stood up and did it anyway. This is just the beginning for my girl. And I will be right there to cheer her on all the way!
