I found Amanda’s blog a few months after I started blogging myself. I instantly fell in love with her and her dudes. She shares real-life parenting advice and fashion tips. She’s beautiful and smart and funny. I’m so proud that I can call her friend, and I’m so thankful that she is sharing her grandmother’s recipe for homemade biscuits for Momma Can Cook.
Growing up I lived within walking distance to my grandmother’s house.
We also lived in the blistering hot Mojave Desert at the time so, while I could walk or bike there with relative ease, I can count on one hand how many times I actually dared to brave heat stroke to do so.
But, we did hit her house (via car of course) for more Sunday morning, post church breakfasts than I can count or recall.
Some weeks we’d have fried ham and eggs, others she’d do omelets and sausage, no matter what she presented us two things were always on that table: homemade biscuits and peach preserves.
My mom inherited that recipe and, when we moved away, she kept the tradition of Sunday morning biscuits and preserves going in our home.
I’ve not been motivated enough to try my hand at canning my own preserves, but I can throw down on some biscuits.

Heart Shaped Homemade Biscuits
3 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter (soft-ish, but NOT melty)
1/4 cup shortening (I use the butter flavored one because, butter, butter, butter!)
1 cup milk
1. Preheat oven to 450.
2. Add all dry ingredients to bowl.
3. Cut in butter and shortening. I use a pastry cutter because I’m fancy like that. Previously, I used a fork. Same, same.
4. Make a well (aka a big ole hole) in the middle of your lumpy mix and pour in milk.
5. Blend well then pour out onto a floured surface.
6. Knead the dough. Put your back into it for a few good strokes (only like 4-6 so your biscuits don’t come out heavy).
7. Roll flat. But not too thin (an inch will give you thick style country type biscuits good for butter and jam).
8. Cut out with your heart shaped cookie cutter. If it’s not Valentine’s Day use another shape. Or a drinking glass. Those work perfectly fine.
9. Lay on cookie sheet and bake at 450 for about 10 minutes.
10. Let cool for a few minutes, then grub.
