David and I finished our Christmas shopping for the kids this weekend. Like last year, we took them both to Toys R Us to look around and point out some things that they liked. I really needed the help with Cady because she is at kind of a weird age where I wasn’t really sure what to get for her. Of course with Cady, she pretty much liked every single thing in the store that she laid eyes on. James is more like, “that’s okay. That’s cool. Yeah, that looks fun.”
Later that night my mom kept the kids and David and I did the Santa shopping. I normally only go to the toy store during the holidays, along with every other single person where we live. I’m sure that this will come as a major shock to y’all, but did you know the toy store is extremely busy (and OMG how hot does it have to be in there) this time of year. Saturday night I was reminded why I prefer shopping online while I sit at home in my pajamas. Or while waiting for an appointment at the doctor’s office.
Luckily there is a cool new app you can download to your phone that helps you shop. RedLaser is available for the iPhone and Android and Windows markets. Here are five things I like about RedLaser.
1. The Scan Feature:
How does it work? You find something you like in the store, you open the app, select scan, and hold your phone over the barcode of the item. RedLaser searches for that item in other stores and online to make sure you are getting the best price available. For example, you see a snazzy looking red slow cooker on the shelf and you think to yourself, “That would make a great gift for my cousin Shirley who just had a baby, but I wonder if I could get it cheaper anywhere else?”
“Well, I’ll think I’ll go buy that at Walmart instead.” Unless you are philosophically opposed to Walmart or something. It also works for other items, like household goods and groceries, that you buy on an every day basis and not just gift items.
2. The Deals Page
Let’s say you are hanging out with some spare time on your hands, unable to really do anything other than play Angry Birds or check Twitter, when all of the sudden you remember that you love to shop online and you need to knock some people off your Christmas shopping list.
Of course you want to save as much money as possible, because who doesn’t, so you open your RedLaser app, open the deals tab, remember that your Uncle Jake loves electronics, and select Best Buy to see what kind of deals they have going on, and commence shopping. You can even complete the purchase on your phone while you are waiting for your doctor to come look at your infected ears. Not that I know anything about that.
3. Store All of Your Loyalty Cards in One Place
I don’t know about you, but I am a sucker for those little cards you can get from the drug store, grocery store, clothing store, toy store… well pretty much every where nowadays. The only problem is that you either have all of those little taggies taking up all the place on your key chain or your wallet is stuffed so full you can’t get it to clasp or they are swimming somewhere in the bottom of your handbag.
RedLaser stores all of them for you in one place. All you do is open the app, go to the “more” option, select loyalty cards, select the store you want (or add it if it isn’t there), and scan or enter the code from your card. The next time you go to the store you just whip out your phone and have the clerk scan the barcode directly from your phone. No more taggies. No more overcrowded wallet. No more digging in your purse while the woman behind you in line hyperventilates from the sighing.
4. The Search Feature
Let’s say you have someone on your shopping list that wants something completely random, like a Tipton gun vise. I don’t know about you, but I have no idea what a Tipton gun vise is, much less what it looks like or what the best price would be. Let’s also say you have some spare time while you are waiting on your daughter to get out of dance class because no matter how late you wait to pick her up she NEVER gets out on time, all you have to do is open the RedLaser app, go to the search feature, type in “Tipton Gun Vise”, and the app takes care of the rest of it for you. Again, you can purchase it through your phone or you can go to your local retailer and pick it out in person.
5. Shopping Lists
I don’t know about you, but the older I get the more lists I need. I keep a running shopping list in my phone already. The RedLaser app has a section under the “more” tab with all different kinds of lists you can keep, from what you need at the grocery store to what books you want to read. The lists can also be shared via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, or text. This is AWESOME if you have a husband that you send to the store, especially because it lets you select what brand of item you want. I don’t know about you, but don’t bring me Green Giant green beans if I asked for Del Monte.
The only downside I found while using the app was that it is new and not everything has been stored in their database. For example, while testing the app I scanned a particular bicycle at Walmart and it did not come up. I did a search for the bicycle and the app only located it on eBay. I do think this is a minor thing and that it will get better. 90% of the items I searched for were in the database.
Do you think this is an app that could help you with your Christmas shopping? What about every day shopping? Which feature do you think you would like the most?

Disclosure: I was compensated in return for trying the app and writing about my opinions of the app. All thoughts and opinions are my own and are 100% honest. Because that’s the only way I know how to be. Also, I do not have a cousin Shirley or an uncle Jake. Those were just examples. I do, however, have a husband that wants a Tipton gun vise for Christmas. And unfortunately, I really do know something about infected ears.
