I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle!
The Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun is quite possibly the mother of all Christmas gifts. While I did not receive one as a holiday gift, I did have a BB gun when I was child. One summer my grandmother gave me and my two cousins $10 to spend on whatever we wanted. All three of us went to the sporting goods section of our local West Gibson and purchased a Red Ryder BB gun.
We lived close enough to one another that the only thing separating us were two wooded lots and a section of dirt road. That year we lived in the woods surrounding our houses, only coming home for food or darkness. Those BB guns came with us everywhere. I can still remember the feel of the cardboard tube of BBs in my hand as I loaded the gun and the tit tit tit sound they made as the filled the gun.
My mother must have gotten to Miss Shields! There could be no other explanation!
“You’ll shoot your eye out! You’ll shoot your eye out! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!”
Was there no end to this conspiracy of irrational prejudice against Red Ryder and his peacemaker?
Nostalgia washed over me when I was offered the opportunity to purchase a Red Ryder BB Gun and host a giveaway for y’all. Memories of walking through the woods with a BB gun grasped in one hand as I followed the bobbing head of my older cousin blazing the trail in front of me as we “hunted”. I’m not sure what we would have done if we had ever managed to shoot anything besides a tin can or a tree, but in the minds and hearts of a 10 year old, reality was inconsequential.
The only problem with all three of us having the exact same gun was that they all looked alike. Sometimes this would lead to disagreements over whose was whose. Now that I’m a parent I can see that it didn’t matter. I’m sure our moms even told us “they’re all the same!” more than once, but as kids ownership was important.
One afternoon my cousins, brother and sister, were arguing. One of the BB guns had been misplaced and they both thought the found one was theirs. We stood in the middle of the dirt road as they struggled with one another over who would get to use it. During the fight, the trigger was pulled and my younger cousin was shot at close range in the forehead. Her brother was so distraught over the what could have happened that he smashed the gun into hundreds of pieces. I don’t remember us playing with them much after that.
This is one of the reasons gun safety is so important to me now. I wrote an article on that topic last year, What Have You Taught Your Children About Guns?. Gun safety is also important to Daisy Outdoor Products. A warning is included on every box and they have a list of 10 Shooting Safety Rules on their website that should be read by parents and children.
While I don’t have a child that meets the Daisy Outdoor Products age requirements, we do have someone that loves BB guns. David’s uncle has some developmental delays that have kept him locked at a pre-teen to early teen level. He will be very excited to open this gift on Christmas Eve.
I’m also hosting a giveaway for one lucky reader to win a prize pack from Daisy Outdoor Products. Have a child that loves pink? Don’t worry. That’s one of the prize pack options.
One winner will receive either a Red Ryder BB Gun or a Pink Carbine Action BB Gun (their choice), BBs, and safety glasses. Please only enter if you have a child or someone over 10 to whom you can gift the BB gun. See entry form below. Hopefully you will be the lucky one with a special present under the tree.
Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pranging ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.
All quotes are from the iconic A Christmas Story. And even though it doesn’t apply I absolutely must include my favorite quote from the movie:
Only one thing in the world could’ve dragged me away from the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window.
That’s great writing people.
