It is that time of year again. Time to start planning for the holidays. If you are anything like me the minute you tuck the kids into bed on Halloween night you are thinking ahead to what you’ll be preparing for Thanksgiving and what Christmas presents you need to add to your list (and maybe even turning up the Christmas carols and putting up your tree, what, too early?).
One of the things I love is all of the holiday comforts I’ve grown used to over the years. The old traditions that have been around since I was a kid, and the new ones that David and I have developed since Big Girl was born seven years ago. Here are the things that bring me comfort at the holidays.
1. Chicken and Dressing – Being a Southern girl I’ve always had cornbread dressing at the holidays instead of stuffing. Actually I’ve probably eaten stuffing less than 10 times in my entire life. When I was growing up my grandmother always prepared the dressing for holiday meals. A few years after I was married I decided I needed to learn how to do it so I went over early one Thanksgiving and had her go through the whole process with me. I still make it just like her today. I can’t imagine having it any other way.
2. Santa Ornaments – When David and I first got married we had no money. I bought the cheapest Christmas ornaments I could find and even hand painted some from the craft department to save money. At the time I stuck with Santa Clauses without really planning it. I still have some of those same ornaments today. It doesn’t feel like Christmas has started until I hang them on the tree. Over the years I’ve also managed to gather quite a collection of Santas to sit around the house. I love every single one of them, and several of them have very special meaning to me.
3. Elf On the Shelf – This is a new tradition we started last year, but I can’t wait to pull him out again. Big Girl has already started asking me if Dobby will be back this year. Oh yes he will will be, and he has several ideas up his sleeve to keep the kids entertained when he returns.
What about you? What are some of the things that bring you comfort at the holidays? Do you have any old or new traditions that you follow?
